Viscosity-grade selection
Grade is chosen for the operating temperature and pump type. ISO VG 46 is the common all-round marine grade; VG 32 suits colder duty and VG 68 warmer engine-room service. Multigrade and high-VI oils widen the usable temperature range for deck systems exposed to weather.
Anti-wear chemistry and cleanliness
Zinc (ZDDP) anti-wear oils protect vane and piston pumps; ashless (zinc-free) oils are used where filterability and water tolerance matter. System cleanliness to an ISO 4406 target is critical — most hydraulic failures trace back to particulate contamination and water rather than the oil itself.
Biodegradable options for oil-to-sea risk
Deck equipment that can leak overboard — cranes, steering gear on some vessels — may require Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) under the US EPA Vessel General Permit. Saturated-ester hydraulic EALs meet these requirements while retaining anti-wear performance.

Which ISO VG do I need?

Zinc or ashless hydraulic oil?
Zinc anti-wear oils are the standard workhorse; ashless oils are chosen where water separation, filterability or environmental compatibility is a priority. We'll advise based on your pumps and duty.
