Technical Detail
Carbon and deposit control
As air is compressed it heats up, and any oil carried over can oxidise into carbon deposits on valves, discharge lines and in air receivers. A good compressor oil resists this deposit formation, keeping valves clean and reducing the risk of receiver fires.
Discharge temperature and oil life
Higher discharge temperatures shorten oil life sharply. Mineral oils suit moderate-duty reciprocating compressors; polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetics are chosen for high discharge temperatures, extended drain intervals and cleaner operation in hard-worked screw units.
Water and condensate management
Compressing humid air produces condensate. Compressor oils must protect against rust and separate cleanly from water at drains, keeping the crankcase and cylinders protected in a wet operating environment.

Mineral or synthetic compressor oil?
Mineral grades cover most standard marine reciprocating compressors. Choose PAO synthetic where discharge temperatures are high, drain intervals are long, or deposits have been a recurring problem.
Which viscosity for my starting-air compressor?
Follow the compressor maker's recommendation — VG 100 and VG 150 are common for marine reciprocating starting-air machines, VG 68 for lighter service-air duty.
