Refrigerant compatibility
The oil must be compatible and, where required, miscible with the system refrigerant. Ammonia (R717) plants typically use mineral or PAO oils; HFC systems (R134a, R404A, R407, R410A) require synthetic polyol-ester (POE) oils; CO2 (R744) systems use specific POE grades. Using the wrong oil risks poor oil return and compressor damage.
Oil return and low-temperature behaviour
Oil circulates with the refrigerant and must return to the compressor rather than logging in the evaporator. Correct miscibility and low-temperature fluidity keep the oil moving through the system and protect the compressor at reefer temperatures.
Moisture control with ester oils
POE oils are hygroscopic — they absorb water readily — so they must be kept sealed, charged carefully and protected by good driers. Excess moisture causes acid formation and system corrosion, so handling discipline matters as much as grade selection.

Which oil for an ammonia (R717) plant?
Ammonia systems generally run on mineral or PAO oils. We'll match the grade to your compressor make and operating temperatures.
Why can't I use mineral oil in an HFC system?
Mineral oil is not miscible with HFC refrigerants, so it won't return to the compressor properly. HFC systems require polyol-ester (POE) oil designed for that refrigerant.
How do I avoid moisture problems with POE oil?
Keep containers sealed, minimise exposure during charging, and maintain effective filter-driers. We supply POE grades in appropriate sealed packaging for shipboard handling.
