Oxidation stability and long life
Turbine oil stays in service for a very long time, so oxidation resistance is the defining property. Highly refined base oils with R&O inhibitors resist thickening and acid formation, keeping the charge serviceable for years with only top-up and monitoring.
Water separation and air release
Turbine systems entrain moisture and air. Good demulsibility lets water drop out at the reservoir, and fast air release prevents foaming that would disrupt the oil film in journal bearings. Both protect the bearings and governor systems.
Varnish and deposit control
Oxidation by-products can deposit as varnish on close-clearance parts — servo valves, bearings and governor components. Modern turbine oils and periodic varnish-potential testing (MPC) keep control surfaces clean and responsive.

How often should turbine oil be replaced?
Turbine oil is condition-based, not calendar-based: it's changed when oxidation, water or varnish potential reach limits, which can be many years. Regular analysis governs the decision.
What viscosity for a turbocharger?
Turbochargers with their own oil supply typically use a light R&O turbine oil, commonly ISO VG 32. Many modern turbochargers are instead lubricated from the main engine oil system — check your maker's manual.
