Port Detail
Strategic location
Trincomalee is one of the finest natural deep-water harbours in the world, on Sri Lanka's east coast facing the Bay of Bengal — close to India's southeast seaboard. Its position on east–west routes gives it strong potential as a regional bunkering and energy hub.
Market structure
Lanka IOC — the Sri Lankan arm of Indian Oil — supplies bunkers here and operates part of the historic China Bay oil tank farm. An India–Sri Lanka joint venture (Trinco Petroleum Terminal) is developing the wider tank-farm and energy infrastructure.
Fuels
Low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO 0.5%) and IFO 380 (HSFO) are supplied, with LSMGO (under 0.1%) available; deliveries conform to ISO 8217 and are typically surveyed independently.
Operational notes
With 30 m-plus draft and natural shelter from the Trincomalee Canyon, the harbour supports bunkering at anchorage even in adverse weather. Bunker barges deliver in-port, at anchorage and at OPL.
