LNG Bunkering in India: Where It Stands

As LNG-fuelled tonnage grows, the question for operators in the region is where they can actually bunker it. India is steadily building that capability.

From regasification to bunkering

India already operates substantial LNG import and regasification capacity to feed its expanding gas economy. The next step — the one that matters for ships — is dedicated bunkering capability at ports, so LNG-fuelled vessels can refuel rather than only pass terminals that serve the onshore market.

Where it is developing

LNG bunkering infrastructure is being developed at several major Indian ports, including the Mumbai region, the Chennai and Ennore area, and Visakhapatnam, among others. The picture is one of capability maturing rather than being uniformly available, so LNG should be planned around the ports that have the facility rather than assumed everywhere.

The regulatory picture

An LNG stem touches more approvals than a conventional one: downstream gas regulation, vessel-side and flag or administration approvals, port-authority coordination, and the bunkering licences and safety regime governing LNG transfer, including simultaneous-operations rules. These are being put in place as the capability grows.

Why it matters

Developing domestic LNG bunkering positions India to serve the growing dual-fuel and LNG fleet transiting the region, and reduces the need for operators to plan LNG stems only around distant established hubs. See our LNG grade page for fuel detail.

Planning an LNG stem in India

Because the infrastructure is still maturing, advance arrangement is essential. Confirm the delivery mode available at the port — truck-to-ship today, ship-to-ship as capability expands — along with boil-off management and compatibility, well ahead of arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bunker LNG in India today?

LNG bunkering capability exists and is expanding at selected major ports, but it is not yet uniformly available. It should be planned around ports that have the facility, with advance arrangement.

Which Indian ports are developing LNG bunkering?

Development is underway at several major ports, including the Mumbai region, the Chennai and Ennore area, and Visakhapatnam, among others.

Is delivery truck-to-ship or ship-to-ship?

Truck-to-ship is the more common mode while capability is maturing, with ship-to-ship developing as infrastructure expands. The available mode should be confirmed per port.

How much notice does an LNG stem need?

More than a conventional grade. Because infrastructure is still developing, LNG stems need to be arranged well in advance, with delivery mode and compatibility confirmed early.
