Gibraltar supplied about 4.8 million tonnes in 2024. Fast anchorage delivery, no port dues for bunkers-only calls, and a long-established supplier base make it a favourite quick top-up. As a UK overseas territory it sits outside the EU customs area.

Algeciras & Ceuta

Directly across the bay, Algeciras (Spain, EU) and Ceuta (Spanish enclave) complete the Strait cluster, giving suppliers and buyers alternatives within a few miles of each other.

The wider Mediterranean

Inside the Med, Barcelona, Malta, Piraeus and Augusta serve traffic that does not need to reach the Strait, while Las Palmas in the Canaries covers the Atlantic and West Africa approaches. Istanbul and the Turkish Straits anchor the eastern gateway to the Black Sea.

The EU carbon overlay

Most Mediterranean bunker ports are in EU member states, so the EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime apply to voyages touching them — adding a carbon cost to conventional fuel. Gibraltar itself is outside the EU, but voyage-based ETS obligations still attach to the EU legs of a voyage.

What it means for buyers
